Census: More women take on role of sole breadwinner! This headline caught my attention on CNN.com but the article vanished before I got a chance to read it. Fortunately, I noticed it again in the Annapolis based Capital Newspaper this week.
Census: More women take on role of sole breadwinner! I am not a market researcher. I am just a curious Southern Maryland Realtor. This trend has been accelerated by the recession but it is unclear if it is a short lived or long lasting phenomenon. I wonder how or whether this will impact Real Estate Buying and Selling trends. We have studies on every other aspect of selling and buying homes that are published yearly by NAR. I inhale them. They are really fascinating and I like to incorporate the findings in real estate listing appointments when relevant. Anyway, this statistic from the U.S. Census Bureau is intriguing and I hope it is researched further.
The Capital article mentions that employed wives contributed up to 45% of the total family earnings in 2008, which was up from 44% in 2007. This was the single largest increase in ten years. Also, in 2009, 7% of the married families with children had only the wife employed which was up from 5% in 2007 according to the Census. The percentage of married couples with children in households where both parents worked dropped form 63% in 2007 to 59% in 2009. The percentage of unemployed husbands with childen doubled from 3% to 6% from 2007 to 2009. The percentage of unemployed wives also doubled during this period. So what are your thoughts on changed real estate buying and selling patterns as a result of this Census Data?
