The Sixth Section of the Southern Maryland Heros and Heroines Series is a deserved recognition to some of the people who provide valuable services for our Southern Maryland Residents. In particular, I'd like to start with Kathy Sirois at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a group of "Extraordinary People Creating Exceptional Guide Dogs" in Southern Maryland. I would also like to highlight Lee Ann Stedman, who founded and operates an Elder Care Business in Southern Maryland, Circle of Care, LLC. Post 6 of a 7 part Series Southern Maryland Unsung Heroes and Heroines would not be complete without mentioning these local Heroines!
If you are searching for information on Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Southern Maryland, or the Bay Region in Maryland, or would like to locate a puppy raiser in Southern Maryland, contact Kathy Sirois at www.Volunteer.guidingeyes.org or EMail her at wcsirois@aol.com . She is an experienced 8 year "puppy raiser "volunteer in both Anne Arundel and Calvert County. Kathy is a puppy raiser for each service dog for roughly 14 months. Upon completion, the puppies go to the Yorktown Heights, New York Kennels which is the location where the pups continue training until they are certified to become a dog for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is one of the largest guide dog organizations in the country. They breed and raise all their own dogs to be used as guide dogs. There is no charge whatsoever for the trained pup provided the new owner is certified blind or visually impaired. Kathy is a total volunteer who received training at a four week class but continues to go to training classes every week with her Bay Region Group in Bowie. Kathy socializes and teaches the pup good manners so they are welcome in society. The dogs are Labs, Goldens and German Shepherds. The dogs never fail; they just instead have career changes such as bomb sniffing, arson detection, and police duty. The dogs sometimes also work with wheelchair patients and autism children. If you are interested in becoming a puppy raiser, contact Kathy Sirois of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Or, if you need a trained pup, Kathy is raising her 7th dog, Dudley, a yellow Lab who most assuredly will receive his diploma with Kathy's professional training. Puppy Raisers are needed desperately to maintain Guiding Eyes for the Blind as a charity. Kathy volunteers for Guiding Eyes for the Blind because it is a FREE Charity and because this organization strives to give independence to the visually impaired. Kathy will bring Dudley for a visit to explain to various groups the services these four legged angels provide and to demonstrate what they are trained to do for their companions.
