Have you survived a laptop crash or two or three? I'm probably quite a bit over that when you add up all the years and all the laptops. It's one of those things that put sheer terror in you once you've had that dead screen. I've always been good about backing up. Lately, I have been using Carbonite but that does not give me the safe and sound feeling I had with the Iomega Hard Drives backed up. They switched their long standing program to Retrospect and I have not learned it yet.
Have you survived a laptop crash or two or three? Yep, that's me. I try to buy a new laptop every two or so years because the income loss is not worth it. I just demote the current laptop to use for travel or relocate it to the office. I can keep several laptops going now with photos and social networking in my work area. The way I go thru them, the more the merrier.
Anyway, it has been shutting off. Norton 360 is alive and well. It is either heating up or the memory is insufficient. So at the top of today's list was to get more memory installed. There was a concern it would not boot up. In that moment, I could see the blue screen. It turned out okay but the Computer Geeks told me that the fan was making a lot of noise and to call HP, since I have a great warranty plan, and have the fan noise addressed. Noisy fan is a dying fan is how they explained it.
I had a very difficult time with the HP rep. I love HP. I was really disappointed in their stand. I persisted until after 20-30 minutes of clarifying that I wanted the fan replaced because the Computer experts said the noise indicated a fan that was about to go bad. You would have thought he was paid to not perform the service. He wanted me to call back in a few days and tell them my impression of the fan noise. Another hour on the phone to report something I know nothing about. I should have asked for a Manager earlier and not wasted so much time with someone who clearly did not want to honor my three year service plan.
I should get a new laptop but I like to load them during the Holidays when it is slower and the 64 bit does not work with all my programs. Plus, I want all the kinks worked out of Windows 7. No, I am not switching to a Mac but I love the commercials. I wish HP had been better on their service today. They usually are great. It leaves you feeling uneasy. And I am a big HP advocate... usually.
An hour later: I have come back to amend this post. I decided to call HP back when I dicovered my control keys have stopped working. And also my function keys have stopped working. I got the best HP rep yet from China! He patiently worked with me and the technician is coming out this week to look at the keyboard, the system board, and the fan. Now that's the HP I am used to working with and that's the reason I have more HP products than I can count. Good end to the story. I'm glad I called back and got a different rep who wanted to help me solve the problem ad let me use my service plan.
