My Travel Laptop Croaked...Now What? When you run a small business, you do a bit of everything. That means accounting, advertising, marketing, customer service, production...EVERYTHING. So when the hard drive crashes, or it appears that is what has happened, and the data back up is not the main concern because the data is on the main laptop, then the question becomes... what next?
I have thought and thought about this. This travel laptop was just under two years old. It takes a month to load a new laptop in between my other work. It appears to be the hard drive but it could be something else. The choices are:
Pay $89.00 to HP and ship to them for diagnostics to find out what is really wrong. Get the true cost and issues. Decide then whether to invest more or bail. I already have $150 in a local computer store analysis who thinks it is the hard drive. My quick bios test revealed a hard drive issue. HP said it was around $200 for a hard drive but the computer store had one considerably less and I can insert it. I can spend the month reloading the hard drive on a two year old laptop. Licenses will be used up on this two year old revived Vista Machine.
Next plan is I can host a funeral for it and buy an iPAD before Christmas when there is possibly an upgrade scheduled. The iPad will be fabulous for a travel laptop. But my other laptops are three years old and that is old for technology. When they go belly up, I am caught off guard again because my data is there.
The other choice is to purchase a new Windows 7 laptop I have selected at HP and invest just over $1,000 and load that from scratch with all the licenses during December when there is more free time.
So there you go, I can spend $89.00 and find out the real deal and then fix it based on the quoted price OR get an iPad OR get a new laptop to use as my main laptop and one of the current laptops can become the travel laptop. The new laptop will be just a few hundred more that the iPAD. My Travel Laptop Croaked...Now What? What would you do? This has me in a stew!
