Fifty Plus Years of Southern Maryland Fourth of July Holidays...I remember....Well, I have had the same Southern Maryland zip code for about fifty years. Who in the world can say that? Well, I can. Now, in the moment of full disclosure, I must also reveal that a few years there it was also a Blacksburg ,VA Hokie High zip code and during the winter there was also a Mayo and Edgewater zip code, but plain as day , I have had a Chesapeake Beach 20732 Zip code most of my life.
Fifty Plus Years of Southern Maryland Fourth of July Holidays...I remember....So, I can remember a Fourth of July or two in Southern Maryland. I remember the Parades at Neeld Estate. They still have them. I remember the crowds at Breezy Point when I worked the Gate. I remember the Fireworks at Chesapeake Beach. I remember lots of parties for clients and friends and family members because I have parking for the Fireworks so I become a hot spot each year that day.
I remember the day I lost my second Golden Retriever and how important pet safety is on the Holiday. I think of him each year this day.
I remember there was a year as a child that I slept throught the afternoon and woke up afraid that I had missed the BIG day. My Uncle would always have a Fireworks display on the Beach and I did not want to miss them. Even now, it is mesmirizing to sit on the beach over the Fourth of July Holiday and watch Fireworks across the Bay on the Eastern Shore.
Turtle Races, yep, still? Picnics, yep. Pride in America, you betcha!
I remember that one year I went to the mountains for the Holiday. There was a hole in my heart. I love Southern Maryland. The last day of school at Virginia Tech, I left for home in Southern Maryland and decided that was that, I was there to stay.
