My best friend's Dad had a birthday on the Fourth of July...My thoughts drift to my best friend's Dad on the Fourth of July. He was a character. His birthday was on the Fourth of July. So naturally he thought that all the hub bub was about him. When our little beach community would have its annual Fourth of July Parade and approach their beach cottage, he would salute or wave or somehow communicate that he believed it was all done mostly for him. And maybe it was. My brother was able to mimic this at Mr. K's funeral and had the whole place in hysterics because my brother nailed this caricature dead on.
My best friend's Dad had a birthday on the Fourth of July...He had a booming military voice. He kept my best friend straight and me, too. You did not mess with Mr. K. He was a good family man and a good Dad to my best friend. Difficult? Yes. Great? Well, that, too. He gave his kids good educations and summer vacations and I still remember riding in the sixties mustang he got her brother. I remember the time we had a crab war and my best friend's younger brother left some live ones in the wagon. That smell of dead crabs never left that station wagon. It was there the day we all drove to Va Tech for six hours. We all lived to talk about it , too.
I remember him sitting on the beach with Mrs. K and going to hear the Crystalaires on Saturday night. I remember he used to help my best pal with her taxes every year. I remember he was Sigma Chi. He was a Republican, period. I remember he could really bellow. But he was still a nice fellow. He was difficult, he was charming, but he was a great Best Friend's Dad. Happy Birthday, Mr. K.
The day of the funeral in Southern Maryland I came home after the service and realized he was now with Mrs. K. Then, clear as day, I looked over the Bay and there was a double rainbow. It was breathtaking and unforgettable and wonderful all at the same time. I know my best friend's thoughts are with him today and so are mine. When a parade goes by, he is saluting high up in the sky.
