Just pass a FROZEN bag of peas, PLEASE!
My second Golden Retriever, Trevor Triever, was a free spirit. He lived life on his own terms. He was a Golden Goof Ball and I loved him for it. He could always make me laugh.
Anyway, we were out by the garage playing fetch many moons ago.
Next thing I knew, he ran smack dab into me by mistake and there I landed ungloriously sprawled out on the ground at Mosquito Gulch.
I somehow got up the hill, inside the house, and gathered the composure to call my childhood best friend.
Her Mom had been a Nurse so of course she knew everything about how to handle my moans and groans and swells and bruises.
Since I did not have an ice pack, she suggested putting a bag of frozen peas over my swollen ankle.
Trevor Triever grabbed that bag of peas and took off running with it in the great room. To my complete surprise, and to his complete delight, next thing I knew I had peas everywhere.
Fast forward many years to my fourth Golden Retriever, Riley Rover.
I came home last night and fell flat on my face again. My new DEE sign riders were tossed on the living room floor by yours truly en route to storage in the garage. Total early Fall unexpected darkness and lots of miscalculation later, I was sprawled out at Mosquito Gulch all over AGAIN.
One bumped head, many bruises and swollen everywhere later, I started to grab for the Advil and a bag of frozen peas. I couldn't help but think of Trevor Triever and his MAD dash around the great room with the bag full of peas. He was so proud of himself.
So this time I grabbed the Advil plus three Zip Lock Bags with ice and washcloths in each one. Many years later it is Riley Rover is snoozing away at my side. Somehow instead of focusing on all the bumps and bruises I can't stop smiling about my Boy, Trevor Triever, and the frozen peas. I still love you, Boy, and after all these years you can still make me laugh.
Note to self, next time take the newly delivered signs straight to the garage. It's not worth cleaning up all the peas.
P.S. Mucho thanks to @MargaretRome for the makeshift ice bag idea!
