The Fall 2010 Parks and Rec Bulletin has a Calvert County Maryland "How Grateful I Am" Children's Writing Contest. It's geared toward the Thanksgiving range so entries must be submitted to either of the Twin Beach Community Centers by November 17, 2010. The winning entries will be displayed at the Northeast Community Center. Visit www.co.cal.md.us for more information.
Children between the ages of 10 to 16 can write an essay of 300 words or less expressing why they are thankful. It's not so hard to do, but the results can be Golden for a lifetime.
When I was in Sixth Grade, the American Legion sponsored a writing contest titled. "What Freedom Means to Me." I wrote my entry and proudly showed my Dad. He was less impressed. He said I would not win any contests with that entry. So I quietly rewrote it and submitted it.
Now, when they announced the winner of the "What Freedom Means to Me" at the Sixth Grade Graduation, I was one of the THUDS but what was much more fun was to know my Dad was the other THUD on the floor. I won a paper certificate that has given us a lifetime of laughter. Even way back then, I knew to never, never, never give up.

Cheryl, how cool for you to have written about your Dad back then. Also, it might not be such a bad idea that in tough economic times as we now find ourselves, that perhaps each of us might write a letter to ourselves talking about something each of us is grateful for.
Thanks, Carolyn, that is sweet!
